R and G are four months old tomorrow. I was going to say something glib like ‘where has the time gone?’ but I only need to read back through my journal to see where it has disappeared to. I still think of them as tiny 6 and a half pound newborns, even though I know they weigh more than double that now – well over 13 and a half pounds last time we weighed them.
It didn’t hit home until I caught sight of myself carrying G around in the reflection of the kettle (not as mad as it sounds, it’s a stainless steel jobby) the other day. Looking back was (a hall of mirrors) version of me and this massive chunky baby tucked under my arm. For a split second I wondered who the little porker was and then I realised that she was one of mine.
Another cliché: they change so quickly don’t they?
And another: enjoy them while they’re small
So here’s a round-up of the news from the House of Twins (it’s like the house of pain but there’s less jumping):
• They are still teething, with nothing to show for it aside from a lot of dribble
• R has taken to sighing. A lot. I thought babies weren’t meant to sigh? Isn’t it a teenage trait? Is she bored of us already?
• G has developed a new groany cry which magically stops and transforms into a beaming smile the moment she is picked up
• They have their second injections later today – YES, I know it’s late and YES I’m not happy about it.
• G rolls onto her side but shows no signs of rolling over completely yet
• R is most definitely NOT interested in rolling. AT ALL. What an impertinent thing to expect of her!
• Dh persuaded G to hold her own bottle last night (he has a plan to get the girls feeding themselves so that he doesn’t have to, don’t ask), which she managed for a few seconds
• Their hands are MASSIVE. Seriously.
• They babble and chatter all the time now. They take after their mother, obviously.
• They enjoy playing with toys and doing things with their hands
• They have pretty much grown out of their 3-6 month bodysuits and sleepsuits.
A final cliché: they aren’t newborns any more. Personally, I’m glad.
