R and G did their second settling-in session at nursery this afternoon. We dropped them off and left them there for an hour. I took dh to the café that my colleagues and I frequent for a fry-up. As we walked away from nursery, unburdened by babies, bags, buggy or enormous bump for the first time in more than four months I felt…lighter, somehow.
Confession time. Although I missed the girls, it was really, REALLY nice to have a little taste of freedom, even if it was for a very short period. I had already decided that I didn’t want to talk about the girls over lunch so we chatted about random things instead. The fry-up was marvellous, by the way. Completely full we strolled back to the nursery building hand in hand, enjoying the sunshine.
As we rounded the building, I heard a familiar wail. I’d recognise that cry anywhere. Through the window, we saw G being comforted by the head of the nursery. The big cheese. She was no match for G at full pelt though. It was clearly her turn as R had had her go the other day. They work as a tag team Apparently G had been fine for the first 40 minutes but had just lost it and despite everyone trying to calm her down she wouldn’t have it, hence Claudine’s intervention.
The solution was simple. G hadn’t drunk enough of her 1pm feed before we left and evidently she wanted the second half of it. No such problems for R. She had downed her feed like a drunk attacking a can of white lightning and when we went into the baby room she was happily playing in the play gym. Katie said she had been a little upset when we left but was soon distracted by the toys and looked very much at home.
The nursery girls have really taken to the twins (who wouldn’t? A smug mummy writes) and G has now met her key worker, Cheryl, who was at college the other day. She was almost beside herself at the thought of looking after a twinnie four month old. I hope G didn’t manage to put her off too much with her antics as I think they will get on really well. Once I had calmed G down with a restorative bottle she beamed at Cheryl so I think they will be ok. They all seem very protective of R and G because they are so much younger (and tinier) than the other babies in the unit and I feel very safe leaving them in their hands.
We’ve agreed that their next settling in period (on Monday) will be for an hour and a half rather than the two hours it would normally be at this stage in the process. Dh is in charge as I’ll be back at work. He has decided to feed the girls when he gets there, before they go in for the session so they should be contented and on top charming form.
Fingers crossed that they both stay happy this time…
