When I was heavily pregnant I spent a lot of time surfing the ‘net and I found this absolute gem in response to an article about the specialness of twins and multiple births:
“As far as I am concerned multiple births of two or more children as a result of IVF cannot in any way be compared with identical twins, triplets etc. These children are still special as they are a result of one egg splitting and grow up looking identical. Multiple birth children merely look like brothers and sisters.”
A couple of things about this statement struck me. 1. This person clearly thinks that all non-identical twins are conceived as a result of IVF. 2. They have a poor grasp of the mechanics of multiple pregnancies in general. 3. They were stupid enough to post their ill-educated comments on a well-known news website.
I despair. I really do.
