If I had a pound for every time I’d been asked the above question in the last 11 and a half months, I’d be a millionaire. Seriously. When they girls were born it was relatively easy to tell them apart. G had a shock of dark spiky hair. R had lighter hair which quickly fell out and she went through a prolonged bald phase. R has always had a rounder face. G has always had a longer face.

Now they have ‘proper’ hair (light brown/blonde), they look incredibly similar. Before they were born, I thought we’d have a dark haired baby (to match me) and a blonde haired baby (to match dh as a child) but I have to admit that they look frighteningly similar and I can see why people ask the question. I shouldn’t admit this in public, but there are occasions when I glance at a photo and have to spend a couple of seconds working out which baby it is...

We were told that the girls were non-identical at my 12 week scan and we didn’t question it. They were in separate sacs, with separate placentas which generally (but not always) indicates that they were two eggs fertilised by two sperm – non-identical. However, I thought they would look quite different from each other. Non-Ids are supposed to become less alike after the first six month, not more.

I know quite a few sets of non-ID girl twins and they look remarkably different from each other - one dark haired, one blonde. One curly haired, one straight haired. Different face shapes. Different eyes. Different distinguishing features. The only differences that R and G have is the face shape and the fact that R has a tiny golden fleck in her (green) eyes. They both have beautiful green eyes, lucky girls! Oh and the small matter of their very different personalities, but even Id’s can have very different temperaments.

Our friends and family are split on how alike the girls are. Several people I know are adamant that they are very different and ALWAYS get their names right. There is a middling group that comments on their similarities but knows them well enough to tell them apart. Other people look at the girls rather uncertainly and ask which is which. People who really should know better (naming no names) have given up even trying to tell them apart, which makes me angry and sad in equal measure.

I’m 98% sure that R and G are non-identical but the fact that I’ve been asked so many times if I’m sure means that I am now 2% uncertain. We could have a DNA test done to determine their zygosity but I’ll see how they develop in the next few months.
