Break out the champagne! The girls are 1! Here’s what they’ve been up to in the last month:
1. Food & drink. The girls still have a morning (7am) and evening (6.30pm) bottle. We tried switching the morning bottle from follow-on formula to full-fat cows milk on their birthday but they were having none of it! We’re going to stick with formula for the time being and gradually add a bit of cows milk to it. They are both eating well and had their first Christmas turkey dinner at nursery last week, which they loved.
2. Teeth. G has six teeth, four at the top and two at the bottom. R has five teeth, three at the top and two at the bottom
3. Weight. We weighed them yesterday and according to our (reasonably inaccurate) scales, G is 21lbs 6oz (9.6kgs) and R is 20lbs 7oz (9.3kgs)
4. Standing & cruising. R pulls herself up to a standing position at will now and has just started cruising from side to side. She can also stand for a few seconds without support. She can also stand up in her cot now. G gets on to her knees and has stood herself up in the past but doesn’t seem to want to now. We are trying to encourage her to stand but she’s not fussed. I don’t think that either of them will be walking for a good long while yet.
5. Crawling. They love chasing each other around the room. R likes crawling up to other babies at nursery, stealing their dummies and crawling off, cackling as she goes!
6. Chatting. G points at her head when we ask her where it is. She also says ‘Uh-oh’. They also babble indiscriminately to us and each other. R chats non-stop when the mood takes her.
7. As they’ve just had a birthday (and they are horribly spoilt), they have lots of new toys, including: bouncing Tigger, walking Winnie the Pooh, a push & ride-along toy each, a smart trike each, a hippo shape-sorter, a pull-along caterpillar, a nursery-rhyme electronic book, an animal noises toy and a push-along dog. We operate a strict toy rotation policy so that every few days they have ‘new’ toys to play with.
8. Illness. Don’t you just love winter? The girls have been snotty for the last week or so - a combinations of colds and teething.
9. They both hand things to you e.g. G will play with a toy quite happily and will look round, see you are watching her and had you the toy. She then waits to receive it back. R isn’t quite as keen on this game – she holds the toy out and just when you reach out to take it she pulls it back towards her with a mock-evil little cackle!
10. Birthday. Dh and I took the girls out to Cafe Rouge for lunch. I made a pile of birthday cupcakes in lieu of two big cakes. They were given lots of presents and cards. We toasted surviving the year with cava. Yesterday my family came over for a little birthday party. We bought the girls books and clothes. I gave them each a photo album with pictures from their first year, which I’m going to keep adding to. I didn’t cry nearly as much as I thought I would. I now feel ready for year 2 of the twin experience.
